Working with SAMR

Reading about Dr. Ruben Puentedura's SAMR model and actually working with the model are very different. SAMR can be very subjective, what one person says lands at the Modification level, another might call it Redefinition. To understand SAMR and ensure the model is applied in our classrooms, it's important to work with SAMR. Here are a few ways you can work with the
model on your own, as a team, or with an entire staff.

SAMR Definitions:

Learn the definition for each SAMR level, Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. Further, explore Dr. Ruben R. Puentedura's Weblog for "ongoing thoughts on education and technology".

SAMR Intro & Examples: What is SAMR in District 100?

Watch the 2-minute video to reflect on examples of tasks at each level of the SAMR model. Each example was taken from classrooms in Berwyn South School District 100.

iTeach SAMR Sort Cards:

Download the iTeach Above the Line SAMR Cards for free on Teachers Pay Teachers. Make copies of 8 cards by printing them front to back with the description on one side and the SAMR level on the other side. Pair up participants and distribute 4 or 8 cards to each pair. Allow 20 minutes for each pair to place the cards at each SAMR level.

SAMR Postcards: What did you gain from today?

Download the postcard on Teachers Pay Teachers and print it on card stock paper; pass the postcards out to all staff on an Institute Day. (Discuss the purpose of the activity at the beginning of the day.) Have teachers write down what they've learned throughout the day, while applying it to the SAMR model.

Example:

Blended Ladder: Create a Blended Ladder to integrate TPACK & SAMR

Download the Blended Ladder image and print it on card stock paper or large poster paper. (Laminate the poster sized ladders to reuse.) Introduce SAMR, introduce TPACK, reflect on how the models blend together. Show finished example. Then, allow 45 minutes for participants to create their own Blended Ladder in small groups. Ask a few groups to share their ladders.
